I think it is a necessity. Lovers SHOULD be friends.

The only person I've been engaged to was my friend for a year before we started dating. All the others started out as romantic relationships from the start, and only lasted a few months.
In marriage, fireworks subside over time, and you will run into difficult circumstances throughout life. If the love of your life is also your friend, it will be easier to get through the challenges of life.

I think it's better to be friends, then date, then marry...but that's just me. If you're friends first, you know them on a friendship level and not just a dating level. I think you would know the person better.

it is necessary to become friends with someone before you will marry them...it would make no sense to commit your life to someone you would not even consider a friend
