i think it depends on the person and how shy they actually are. i can see it helping some people, but for others i'm sure it would only give them anxiety and make things worse.

I took acting classes so that I could become a better speaker in front of large groups of people. The classes I took helped me a lot. I feel more confident in myself and what I have to say. It might take a little bit of time.
If they jump into a class that is large it might be harder. I had smaller classes with less than 20 people, so it was easier to be in front of the class when needed. And, when I was on stage..so was the class. We did skits together and such, so the audience was the professor.

In the case of me, I entered a speech club. It might make your more phobiatic at first, but if you stick it out, and speak in front of large groups as much as possible even though doing so makes you want to vomit, it will make you feel much more at ease with yourself in the long run. Im still a little shy, but I have no problem speaking my mind anymore like I used too.

it worked for me... ive always been a shy person, but took an acting course, and now have a lot more confidence... dont be shy, go for it! courses start of with icebreakers to help you get to know your fellow actors, and you will gradually build up your confidence (and acting skills) until you are eventually ready to perform for an audience

If you no longer want to be shy, I don't think acting courses cut it. Public speaking classes... where you give speeches... That's a good one!!!

i think it could help shy people.
Because they'll have to work with a groupd of people, be able to stand infront of a crowd of any size and speak, and just be in the spotlight of a crowd.
