First of all, as everyone has mentioned if you run disk defrag, nothing will get deleted. Let me try to explain it to you in simple terms
Your computer is like a filing cabinet that is only so large. As you collect data, you begin stuffing papers and folder tightly into various crevices. Sometimes, when you take a folder out, you can't get it back into the same spot so you stick it somewhere else. Also, at times you'll find yourself pulling paper out of a folder and sticking it on top of the folder or some other spot, other than where it originally came from. Now it's taking you longer to find files and folders as they are not where they originally started. So, say you hire a secretary, she comes in, dumps all the papers and folders out of the filing cabinet so it's empty. She then goes through each individual record and folder and puts it back into the filing cabinet completely reorganized alphabetically. Thus, you can now find what you were looking for by going to an exact location other than just opening a drawer and thumbing through.
What the secretary did is pretty much what defrag does. It takes all the files, partial files, truncated files, folders, etc and reogranizes them on your hard drive (the physical drive, not what you see) so that the computer can access the information faster. You don't see any changes as this is done on a physical level.
The time it takes depends on how fast your computer is and how much information needs to be rearranged.

NO, it will not delete your files, rather it will arrange them...
Disk Defragmenter is used to Defrag your partition (Local Drive), especially when there's a high volume of files that are fragmented.
When files are fragmented, it takes longer time to access them.. This is because your Hard drive heads have to search in different clusters to look for the entire file...
For example, if your harddrive is formatted with a allocation size of 4096 (4 KB) and you save a file onto that drive that is 4 MB in size, then your computer will split that file in 1000 segments (clusters) in order to store it. Sometimes these segments are not continuous, some parts of the file is stored in the end of the partition and some parts are stored in the beginning, thus making your harddrive head reader to go back and forth to read the file.

No it wont delete stuff. I might ask you if you want to delete some never used stuff.
But its more like rearranging a shelf of books. You took some out and moved some arround. Defrag just tidies it up and makes stuff easier to find.
Time depends on size of the computer. Make sure you are offline and have virus checker off. Sometime defrag will restart over and over because of these.

No, you won't loose any files when you defragment. You will speed up your Computer as the Hard Drive has information scattered all over it.
After defragmentation it packs the information together and frees up space. You asked how long does it take? It varies to how large your hard disk is and how fast your computer is.
The best way if you are concerned about the time is to do it when you go to bed over night.
Happy Computing

I'm assuming you meant defragment your hard drive. If this is the case - no you will not loose any files, it just organizes them in a way the computer can better manage its space and system files. The built in defrag for Windows is okay - but I prefer 'DiskKeeper' - it does a much better job.

Nope it won't delete your files. It's better not to use the default tools came with your OS because it's so slow. Try to search a better software from third party. Good luck.

Computer Slow
Download and then run startup.exe (FREEWARE) at:
http://www.mlin.net/startupcpl.shtml......
Can't live without it and windows...
Then disable and/or uninstall whatever u don't need.
Other things to try:
1 - Disk Cleanup (removal of temp files, cookies, etc.)
2 - Defrag
3 - Registry Cleanup (CAN BE VERY RISKY!)
ALL ELSE FAILS - RELOAD YOUR O/S (WINDOWS) AND THEN REINSTALL ALL OTHER PROGRAMS YOU NEED/USE!
