Do I have to have ONLY an Apple iMac or late-model computer in order to "download(legally, of course)" in order to use an iPod?
I mean, EVERYBODY in my town is harassing me about NOT owning one;I keep telling them that I DON'T have a computer, but they WON'T listen...I always thought that you HAVE to own an Apple computer in order to use/download an iPod?...
Thanks...

No. Just as long as you have a computer that can run iTunes from Apple. iTunes runs on Mac and PC and is Free. You can find the requirements at the apple website.
You really need to get an iPod. Not having one is unamerican.

You don't have to have an Apple computer to use an iPod.
You CAN use an older model computer to legally download music to your iPod. My PC is 3+ years old and handles it just fine.
The beauty part of Apple's products, including the iPod and iTunes (the free software you use to download music to the iPod), is that they are designed to be very easy for people to use. So, your computer equipment doesn't have to be new and fancy and complicated in order for you to use one.

You can use an iPod and iTunes on a Windows-based computer as well as the Mac. However, you really don't need to buy a computer either as long as you can find a friend who'd be willing to set up a user account on their computer and let you rip your CDs and purchase iTunes music just for yourself.
A friend of mine bought an iPod but didn't have a computer, so I let him use mine and he was able to come over and fill his iPod and he'd be set till he needed to come over again and add more.

your town must be pretty dumb. Depending on the model of your iPod, you only need a USB or Firewire enabled PC or Mac. There are ways of getting it on other OSes, but that is not in the realm of this discussion.
