Work -- the expenditure of energy to accomplish a result. Activity directed toward making or doing something.
Anything you do, other than sit around and absorb sensory input, is work.
We live at a technology level where a certain amount of human effort is still required to get things done. Based on technology, we also seem to have limited resources, which means a market economy where these resources are traded.
In a barter economy, you provide either something of value or your efforts, and in return you get either something of value or somebody else's efforts.
In our market economy, if you do work for someone, you get little pieces of paper that give you credit. You can hand over those little pieces of paper (or electronic rights to them) for goods and services. That person/company who provided the goods and services can then do the same in a separate transaction.
Money allows middlemen. Employment and the modern economy allows for more efficient utilization of time and effort, because you can work for someone who values your services, even if they don't have any goods or services they can directly exchange (barter) back to you.
The 5-day work week is arbitrary, and isn't by any means universal. Many people, both high-paying professionals and minimum-wage staffers, work more than 5 days per week, or work on different days than the Monday-Friday schedule.
But the overall concept of taking a break in the middle of a work period is based on psychological and physiological efficiency, as studied over thousands of years. People who do the same job continuously, day after day without any break start to perform poorly. That's why we have lunch breaks and rest breaks, and why there are limits on how many hours people are effective each day.
That's also why we have 'weekends', so people are only working about 70% of any given week. And because of the modern market economy and the ways businesses interact, it is more efficient if they are all open the same days per week. That's why there is a standard work week.
But it's not universal. If you can perform enough services, at a high enough value, in one day per week to earn enough credits (money) to exchange for all of your needs, then there is nothing stopping you. Same as if you can earn what you need in just 8 months of the year, and take four months per year off.
It all depends on how much you can earn (produce) and how much others are willing to pay for it, relative to how much you spend for what you want.

Monkeys invented work. They discovered that if they didn't walk around and gather food up, they would die. The ones that didn't use this invention were weeded out of the gene pool. After a few million years of evolution, we invented something new called "welfare," which works very well for people who can't work, but also works unfortunately well for those who won't work, thus allowing the gene pool to fill back up with bad genes. Go figure!

cain after he slew abel and then was cut off from the family to wander and till the land for the rest of his life and all foreseable generations. Adam / Eve didn't fare all that better either. Work is a punnishment for the transgressions of their sins against the almighty. So unless you can live only with what you NEED and not what you want - which means you CAN technicaly be your own boss and live off the land but you still would have to do the "work" of growing your own food, etc. This was not in the original plan for us. SOMEONE SCREWED UP!!! THANKS EVE!!

God gave us responsibilities from the start. Work didn't become a bad thing until the fall. At that point we were cursed with the kind of work you're talking about. He said, "By the sweat of your brow shall you eat." Later on Paul said, "If he doesn't work he shouldn't eat."
Oh well. At least we can enjoy our work if we learn to do something we like doing and trade that skill with others who like what they're doing.
