It's built into a very heavy wooden box that contains hand-blown glass tubes clamped down on one side and what looks like a turntable on the right side. There is what might be described as a tone-arm on that side but no circular rotating platform to hold records. The base of this side is marble, so it is very heavy. There is a cloth-covered cord with a plug, so it must run on electricity. No one has dared to plug it in yet.

What could this thing be?

I would look up antiques dealers or appraisers in the phone book and see if one can either give you an idea of its use or stop by for a "house call" type appraisal. If nothing else, watch Antiques Roadshow!

i tried to search for what you described but i have no idea what it is. maybe you can try calling up or taking it to an antiques expert. it could be worth something! i wouldnt plug it in if i were you. watch it burst into flames.

try looking on it for anything printed or any writing. maybe that will give you an idea. if you find something google it and maybe something will come up!
