do you have to take the cpa exam to become an accountant or is it possible to become an accountant with just a 4 year degree?

my theory is: if you take an exam, you will always have to have a job in one type of accounting. if you just use your degree, you could work in many different types of accounting.

Depends on what kind of service you want to provide. If you want to do audit, CPA is a requirement; if you are content with bookkeeping, you could probably do without. You may need an EA (Enrolled Agent) designation if you want to do tax returns though...

I am not an accountant and I am not a CPA, but I used to work for a CPA firm.

You do not need to pass the CPA exam to be an accountant, or to work for a public accounting firm. I knew many people who worked as auditors who did not pass the exam.

CPA license looks good on a resume, but it's not exactly a requirement.

you can be an accountant without a cpa but if you want to have a meaningful career you need to get your cpa relatively soon after graduating
