Don't laugh but you have to pour pee on it (fresh urine) and let it soak then spray windex on it and it will break apart with a gentle rub with a towel.

Nature's Miracle available at Pet Supply stores and some large discounters has enzymes which will break down the urea that is causing the odor. It is non-toxic, has no harmful chemicals and does not mask the odor. In your case, I would saturate the area you think is where the odor is coming from. (If you don't know, turn off all of the lights, turn on a black light and it should magically appear, if it is on the surface.) If it is in the padding, which means someone cleaned it out of the surface carpet fibers, you are walking it up from the padding. You have to saturate it until it soaks into the padding. The best way to do that is to use a carpet shampooer or steamer with the Nature's Miracle as your cleaning solvent. Then either use a wet dry vac to suck up the excess or spread towels in the area, hop up and down to draw the excess out of the padding. Once the carpet is dry, sprinkle down borax, let it sit for a day or so and vacuum it up. No more odor. And, unlike vinegar, the Nature's Miracle will keep pets from peeing in the area again.

put one cup of vinegar in your water tank of carpet cleaner or scrub bucket. scrub it. don't use laundry detergent the urine will crystalize and if it is humid or ever gets wet it'll return. the pets are also attracted to it as well and will pee on it right away again. then use a couple tablespoons of real vanilla on the area in a bucket of water to neutralize the smell.
If you are unsure where the smell is or the spot is. Use a lamp with a black light in it and it'll help you locate the area. If nothing of the above helps then you'll have to go more expensive and buy the stuff called OUT
Good luck with the area. Just experiment but be careful not to change the color of the carpet.
