use any image editing program like Photoshop or irfanview to resize /resample the image to a smaller size

Install irfanview (free!):
http://download.oldversion.com/irfanview302.exe
Open the image, File, Save as, choose NEW name (or loose the original), choose JPEG, click Options, click LWF, click 'Compress to', key in: 50000 (bytes), Ok.

Or:

First, get 'Paint Shop Pro' somewhere. A old version will do, or is even better. Like 6 or 7.
8 or higher clog up way too much disk space and start very very slow. If your computer is slow, go for 6. If fast, go for 7. You can do many neat tricks with PSP. Now your answer when using PSP:
Open the image, File, Export, Change compression value to get files of 50K. If it says (approx.) "Compressed: 50.000 bytes" you're done.

Ofcourse, many other photo editing tools can do the same. If you can tell me which graphics software you already own, i might be able to help. Photoshop is rather expensive and overkill.

If you have the photoshop Click file >save for web and adjust the settings in optimize tab
If you have a more simple but free program like Irfanview when you save the photo (a .jpg ) click file>save as >(select show option dialog) and choose a low quality for your photo (drag the slider from less)
Or try on the web for a program called Jpeg optimizer
