Rayleigh scattering (named after Lord Rayleigh) is the scattering of light, or other electromagnetic radiation, by particles much smaller than the wavelength of the light. It occurs when light travels in transparent solids and liquids, but is most prominently seen in gases. Rayleigh scattering of sunlight by the atmosphere is the main reason light from the sky is blue.

The atmosphere that surrounds the earth is mostly nitrogen, with oxygen and various other gasses. Most of these gasses are inert and create little resistance to light, however oxygen reflects the blue spectrum. Light reflecting off the earth surface bounces back out and hits the atmospheric layers including ozone etc. Most of the light gets absorbed, but the light that reflects blue is what we see. Without the light reflection as in at night, the sky is starry and black. The various colors we see as in when the sun goes down are caused by variations in the amount of atmosphere that the light goes through. The motion of the earth causes spectral or light shifts through the spectrum. Red, blue, purple etc.

The sky appears blue because of sunlight scattering. As light "bumps" into small molecules in the atmosphere, the blue end of the spectrum (think of the rainbow) gets absorbed less and this is what we see.

The sky is blue because of the Ozone that surrounds our earth.

There are three different "primary colors of light". They are red, green, and blue. Each of the colors has a different wave length. Blue has the shortest wave length, and therefore is distributed more. I hope that answers your question
