I have a 03 reg Ford Focus and suddenly the engine really starts to strain and splutter and the Engine Management light has started to flash, help please!

Also when I drive it seems as though im running out of fuel although I have plenty; is there a fuel primer, if so where?

Happened to me mate. The problem turned out to be a buggered speed sensor on the clutch, its the cars way of telling you that theres a problem with a sensor or some such.
Its actually a known fault on the 01-04 plate cars and also diesel mondeos, caused by a bad clutch/ and "dual mass flywheel" mechanism design. Google for "ford focus engine management warning light" without the quotes, loads of knowledgable people have written on various forums etc and its also been the subject of a Ford service bulletin which they distribute to their dealers.
Mine just died on me one day at 30 mph, by the end of that same day the clutch had died and it had to be towed back to the garage that i bought it from. £1000 repair to replace the badly designed clutch parts, big job in labour because the gearbox has got to come to access the misbehaving bits, but thankfully it had 2 weeks left on the dealers warranty...
Best of luck mate. I do suggest you get it looked at by either a main agent (not cheap), or ,an independent (not as bad) who you trust to do the fix properly.
-- Also, your engine management system drives your engine in a focus, not your right foot. If its not working properly, its guzzling fuel and the power wont be there.

as soon as you trun the key on count the number of flashes this is usually the code of what is wrong. It could be a number of things from a bad sensor, glogged fuel filter, bad injectors and so on My dad and My boyfriend are both mechanics and also are dealing with a similar experience with their 97 c 1500 pickups (chevy) they keep getting bad injectors and they also found an arcing problem and makes the rotars go bad faster, you can try a major tune up - plugs and wires also replace cap and rotars, counting the flashes and recording them and you can get the code meaning from a local mechanic and he will tell you how to handle it. you can also find books at a library neer you that will help decipher the codes too.
I may be a girl but being raised around cars and racing you learn not to mention having junk cars to use to get a round. I enjoy playing with them too. Atleast it is a start. and could save a little money.

There is probably a sensor failure or other fault. When the engine management light is on, the ECU goes into get you home mode, ie a nurse the engine mode set of basic settings. all performance and refinement goes out the window, it just wants to avoid damaging the motor.
A ford dealer will plug his laptop in and download all the fault codes. from this he will be able to tell what has failed.

This indicates you need to take it to a Ford garage and have it checked for codes. These code numbers will tell the Ford dealer what is wrong. It could be many different things. Good luck

Sounds like you've a fault and the engine management system has reverted to the automotive version of "Safety Mode"

You have a fault in your engine managment need to get codes read so it can be determined what is wrong.Any decent garage has now got code readers.

You need to go to a garage and get it checked out as if you do not know yourself what is wrong with it, then what could start as something simple could lead to something that could lead to you having to buy a new car.

03 plate, you got any warranty left? if not you need the fault codes read to pinpoint the problem.

take it into a ford garage they will plug it into the computer and it will tell you whats wrong probably just needs a full service....
