I arrive in August (high season) at around 5pm...I heard that the roads can be totally jammed and maybe there are other *affordable* ways to get to St. Tropez (boat??). If you have an answer, please provide a link to the recommended solution. Merci/Thank you!

Well, from Nice to St Tropez it can be a pain by car and the is no train station is St Tropez, but you have options

If you leave Nice early, traffic should not be that bad between Ste Maxime & St Tropez. If all you will be doing is visiting St Tropez, a car would be a big "drag" - parking is either non-existant or expensive, unless you know where to park & don't mind walking for 10-20 mins to the center of town.

Take a boat - the coast is quite pretty between La Napoule & St Raphael, and as you approch St Tropez.

You can easily take a train to St-Raphael and a bus from there to St-Tropez. Buses leave from the St-Raphael train station (5/day, 80 min). Boats between St-Raphael and St-Tropez go twice a day (60 min).

I agree with Kafka. You can take a train _almost_ to St. Tropez, but you have to catch the bus the rest of the way, which means you'll face the traffic. I've sat in a bus in St. Tropez rush hour traffic (which is pretty much anytime other than early morning) far longer than I cared to. If there's a boat, that'd be great, but I don't know anything about that. Barring a boat, just make sure that you get there as early as you can, and give yourself extra time on the way out.

At 5 PM I suspect you'll be facing some real traffic, though it might not be as bad going into St. Tropez as coming out. I've never gone in during the afternoon.
