There is usually little anyone can say that will make someone feel better. Time is the only thing that can heal a wound. That said, the person still needs to be supported, and the best thing you can say is, "I'm sorry" and then give them a hug.
Sometimes the best way to support someone is to do something for them rather than leave it to words. If someone is struggling, can you do run an errand, fix a meal, watch a child for a couple hours, watch an elderly parent, mow grass, do laundry? It is the little things that tell people you really care!
