Emotional tears are shed during episodes of very strong emotion (sorrow, happiness, anger, etc.) because the said emotions tend to make muscles around the the tear glands squeeze on them. These contractions are involuntary and are due to the overall increase of stress chemicals in the body that accompany such outbursts.

Furthermore, these tears are thought to induce a sense of well-being because it is said that there are endorphins released when crying to balance out the stress chemicals. When the stres chemicals run out, the endorphins remain, giving us a sense of calmness after crying.
