I guess that depends on how much disposable income you have. If I didn't drink cheap wine, I'd never get to drink any wine, and life is too short to not drink any wine.
But believe me - If you buy me a bottle of expensive wine, I'll drink it.

It is inaccurate. Should be "life is too short to drink bad wine". There is lots of good wine available that is not expensive, and some of the expensive wine is really not good.

Counter argument.
If the wine is cheap you can afford to drink more of it, and still have money left over to go to the show, or buy something to eat, or pay for a cab ride home (if you are no longer safe to walk).

It's saying that to waste ones time on unimportant things is just that, a waste. When you are lying on your death bed, it will only be the truly great things in life that you will remember, good or bad. Cheap wine is a metaphor for a mediocre existence
