On some newer buses, vinyl seats are responsible for the smell. They are heavily chemically treated, and that smell makes me sick to my stomach. On other buses you might be smelling diesel fumes that, despite engineer's best efforts, still sometimes leak into the passenger cabin. Ironically, for me older buses tend to have fewer funky smells, though depending on the bus system newer buses can smell nice too. I do wish transit companies would pay more attention to the smell of their buses, though.
