Hamsters, like many other animals, will bite when cornered. You can also inadvertently train a rodent to bite harder than the usual warning bite by handling it roughly and immediately leaving it alone when it does bite. If it learns that the harder it bites, the longer it will be left alone, it will start biting harder.

If you want a small pet that doesn't bite as much, get a pet rat. I have a one (named Hopper), and he never bites me. Rats are quickly becoming popular pets primarily because they are more reluctant to bite than hamsters... although bad handling and inadvertent reinforcement of any biting behavior can lead to more biting, as described above. The only time I've seen pet rats bite is when people stick food through the cage wires, then stick their fingers in next. Rats don't have good eyesight, so they probably assume that anything stuck through the wires is food... especially if your fingers still smell like what you just gave it.

As for your wound, I'd strongly recommend washing it thoroughly with soap and water. If it's bad enough, seek medical attention.

Hamsters, though the most popular pocket pet, are actually generally the least friendly and the worst pet especially for small children. They are nocturnal and often bite and do not like to be handled. If you're looking for a great small pet, get a rat! I have been breeding rats for 6 years and have only ever been bitten by one (and it wasn't even mine). They are extremely intelligent and make excellent pets. To help your hamster not bite you, make sure you don't have any food or food odors on your hands when you go to pick him up. Also, do not disturb him while he is sleeping, as they become cranky. Good luck!

A hamster is a rodent. It is a cousin to the rat. Rats and mice and hamsters love to gnaw on things anyway. In your case the hamster was probably scared and wanted loose from you. You might want to handle it with a pair of gloves on until it gets used to being handled. And you may need to see a doctor if it brought blood from your hand.

They're evil. I've never met a nice hamster. I have scars from those satanic little things!

It obviously was VERY frightened. What were you doing to it prior to the bite--screaming at it and holding it tightly?? They are gentle sweet animals, but like any animal they don't always want to be bothered, ESPECIALLY during the day--they're nocturnal! You obviously woke it up and it was really mad.

I love my hamster, she is really gentle...but does occasionally nibble on my finger if I have food on it. I would say make sure your hands are clean, be gentle when you pick him/her up and keep your fingers away from those sharp teeth.

thats how mine was. After a couple of years it all of a sudden got really nice. I just started holding it with gloves on so if it tried to bite me it would just bite the gloves

HaHa! He is mean because he isn't getting handled enough. The more you handle them the better pets they make! They need attention too!
