Area 51 is also known as Groom Lake, and is a testing facility for new military flight concepts that are still under top security. The extraordinary security measures taken there are in line with the extremely sensitive nature of the work that is being done, not that the Government has anything there to hide.

The government wanted an area that was large enough to have a runway but was in a remote location and surrounded by hills so that it couldn't easily be observed. They decided on the Groom Lake area. It actually had two dirt runways and was used for training from Nellis during WWII but hadn't been used since. So, a new base was established in 1955 with three hangars, a paved runway and facilities for personnel.

The reason for this secret base was development and testing of the U2 spy plane. This aircraft was designed by Lockheed and flew in less than a year. After the U2 came the secret SR-71 spy plane, then came the F-117 Stealth Figher, and finally the B2 Stealth Bomber.

The first U2 arrived in a C-124 Globemaster in July 1955. An area around Groom Lake became restricted airspace. In 1962 the first SR-71 arrived by truck for testing. Because of the much higher speed of this plane the restricted air space increased 8X.

In 1967 a captured MIG 21 is taken to Groom Lake for examination. Other captured soviet aircraft would be tested here including a MIG 23. The first F-117 Stealth Fighter arrives in 1977. In 1982, Tacit Blue, the prototype model for the Stealth Bomber is first flown. Some time after this actual B2's were tested there.

Sometimes this is associated with the incident in Roswell NM in 1947. This incident occured when a high altitude balloon landed there. The government was very secretive about it because it was part of Project Mogul so they tried to say that it was a weather balloon. Project Mogul was an attempt to detect Soviet nuclear tests by using instruments at a very high altitude. What made this interesting was the description of the mysterious material that was found.

Remember this was 1947. People were quite familar with aluminum foil and tin foil. What one gentleman described looked like aluminum foil but he said it was thinner like tin foil. What really surprised him though was that this mystery metal had a strange property. If you crumple up aluminum foil or tin foil they simply stay in a crumpled ball. However, this metal foil would mysteriously spread itself back out. You couldn't just fold it and have it stay like regular metal foil. This has fueled speculation that this mystery metal foil had to be from an alien space craft because humans would not have been capable of creating it.

Interesting, I have something very similar to it right here. Let's see, shiny like metal - yes, looks very much like aluminum foil - yes, thinner though like tin foil - yes, and when crumpled it mysteriously unfolds itself - yes. What I have here is the wrapper off of a pop-tart. It's made of aluminized plastic. What they found at Roswell was very similar: aluminized mylar. The only reason why this stirred any interest was because real weather balloons are made of latex rubber which looks nothing like metal foil. The other reason was that in 1947 very few people had ever seen metalized plastic. Plastics didn't really catch on for another decade. Today, it is quite common.

What is commonly refered to in the movies as "Area 51" is actually Groom Lake Air Force Base in Nevada. Supposedly, there is, or was, an actual place called area 51 at a military installation in Fort Wayne Indiana, but they may have renamed it.

Area 51 is a section of the Groom Lake facility. No aliens or anything extraterrestrial is there, but lots of really cool planes have come from there.

Broom Lake. Or Maybe Groom Lake. I can't remember.

That's what it's refered to by the US military. It does exist. The security guards hand book (site specific) is available online.
