Generally (and unfortunately) we see other perspectives as last case scenarios. Only when our own views fail us do we look outwards for where we went wrong.

I have to pat myself on the back and say that I'm pretty darn good at walking a mile in someone else's shoes. I might not be successful 100% of time, but I always try to consider the other side of the story.

I have four teenage sons and I was rather surprised at the number of hissy fits and trauma dramas they and their friends got involved in. I always thought that was more of "chick thing" if you'll pardon the expression. These guys have taught me that males and females are more alike emotionally than many would care to admit.

As a result I've had to calm them down and mediate quite a bit. What works nine times out of ten is getting them to see the other person's point of view, even if it's only briefly. It might not totally end their disputes, but it diffuses the situation. I hope it's teaching them some negotiation skills and something about understanding and getting along with others.

I feel like I have lived my life to care for others. I am strong and while I do not like it, I am independent. I am used to people leaning on me and calling me up to help solve their problems. I am used to major life altering issues that they have to deal with and I walk through it with them to the best of my ability.

It is very important to try to view things from all sides of the table. Call it life, God, Karma, if you're not compassionate towards others then sooner or later you will more than likely go through what they are dealing with.

And it helps when you are facing your own crisis because you can simply ask yourself, "what would I tell my friends if they were in this situation?" If you can follow through with what you would tell them then obviously you are giving sound advice. Everyone benefits.
