how long do you have to file a complaint when you are suing in small claims?

i filled out papers to sue the mechanic who started on my car and ran off with the parts and the money. three months ago and still havent turned them in due to the massive heat and transportation

It depends on the statute of limitations for the underlying claim.

Some claims are as short as six months, others as long as four years. It all depends upon your underlying cause of action (what the other person did) and what the rules are in your state.
