A DVR is a device.
And Tivo is a DVR-based service.
There are other DVR services, of course, offered by the various cable and satellite TV companies.

DVR is a Digital Video Recorder. TiVo, Inc. came out with the first commercially available DVR for home use that was hard disk based. (I worked with the folks at SGI who later founded TiVo -- SGI and other companies had hard drive DVR technology for professional applications prior to TiVo).
TiVo provides a complete package service -- DVR device, schedules, and feature updates.
DVRs from other companies such as cable and satellite companies also provide a DVR device, schedules, and feature updates.
I own a TiVo Series 1 (6 1/2 years). I rent a Comcast Motorola DVR for HD TV (because TiVo doesn't yet have one). And I've used Scientific Atlanta DVRs with Time Warner and another cable company.
The all provide the same basic services. Guide based recording. Series recording. Watching shows while they are recording. Fast forward, rewind, pause of live TV.
However, hands down, the TiVo is the easiest to use and the most reliable of the bunch. I'm still arguing with Comcast over flaws in the Comcast DVR software -- their VCR keeps skipping recording of my shows despite having the show set at priority 1. Despite the flaws in the Comcast it is still easier to use than the Scientific Atlanta DVR.
Only the TiVo has features like "Wishlist". It has been flawless when it comes to recording.
Only TiVo has an easy feature to transfer digital recordings over your home network to your PC for burning to DVD or transfering to a Creative Zen Vision M, Sony PSP, or iPod. (A common question on Yahoo Answers).
And I can't wait to get the new TiVo Series 3 HD recorder when it comes out later this year so I can dump the Comcast HD DVR.

Yes! Even though TiVo is a type of DVR, you have to pay a separate fee to them in order to receive the program guide. DVR usually comes from your cable company and is also a box. Another downside to a TiVo is that it can't record High Definition, most DVRs from cable companies can.

tivo is Directv - DVR is Dish or cable. Dish Network DVR has atleast 100 hours of recording time, it is a dual tuner (2 tv capability) has pip function, skip forward and skip back button (for commercials) DVR is free through dish network with a service fee of 5.99 Tivo is $99 with a rebate (if you fill it out right) does not have skip buttons, only has 35-60 hours of recording time, single tuner (1TV), still have dvr function service fee too.
Dish also has HD/DVR which can record in HD and is also a dual tuner. DTV answer to that technology is still delayed. Any other questions.
DVR=digital video recorder TIVO=SUCKS

I was hoping PVR (Personal Video Recorder) would be the moniker that stayed, but it looks like DVR it is. Oh well.
Tivo is the company that offers a monthly subscription service. Most people call DVR Tivo because they were the first. It's like Xerox. Every photo-copier is called a Xerox even though they only make a fraction of them. Every PVR (ha! I'll make it stick yet) will be called Tivo not only because they were the first, but it's a lot easier to say "did you tivo that show?" than "did you record that show on your PVR?".
Tivo has becomes the verb that means "to record a broadcast program for personal viewing". Like Xerox means "to copy something".
Funny, I just realized people used to categorize computers as "IBM" or a "Mac", now people say "Windows" or "Mac". Go figure.

Tivo is a DVR. Tivo sort DVR's are in many cases considered to be the superb via maximum folk. you ought to purchase a separate Tivo DVR to artwork inclusive of your Dish receiver, yet you may could pay one extra month-to-month subscription fee to Tivo, or you ought to easily purchase the Dish sort DVR which does no longer charge one extra fee on account which you're already paying Dish a month-to-month fee for programing.

No, DVR is the technology and TiVo is the service that provides it. Much like Sony is to VCR.
