I recently gave birth to my first child..she is 6 months old now and I breastfeed. My question is...Is it normal for me to have not started my period yet. It has been over a year including the 9 months I was pregnant!

If amenorrhea is your only complaint, then you are doing well. No need for a doctor.

The act of nursing releases oxytocin, it acts in two ways. (1) It stimulates milk let-down, that is, it stimulates your breasts to continue to produce milk. (2) It supresses, via a pituitary feedback mechanism, the return of your cycle. In other cultures where breatfeeding continues longer than in ours, women have been known not to begin to ovulate for three years or more AFTER giving birth.

When you come for a post-natal visit, doctors will ask you about the "B's". Breasts, bleeding, bowel, bladder, baby, blues (depression), birth control, and back to sex. Those are the things that typically can go wrong in the first few months. In your case, the "birth control" questions are especially relevent. At the three month point, sexually interested women are typically encouraged to begin using contraceptives again.

With my first child It was 10 months after giving birth. The second one it was 14 months after giving birth. It took another year after each to be regular again. It is completely normal. A lot of women stop their period while nursing. Be thankful and enjoy it!!!

Yes, it is normal. For me it was 9-12 months after I had a baby before I got my period.

Certainly talk to the doc but some women that breastfeed find this happens.

Many women don't re-start their period until they stop breastfeeding. You're normal.
