They don't understand (or are unwilling to understand) that overweight is NOT always from overeating -- many medical problems can cause overweight. OR, they need to feel superior, but when they open their mouths, it just proves their ignorance. Instead of getting upset, try responding with "Oh, I am so sorry you are incapable of understanding. Maybe you could do some research before you open your mouth again and look / act so stupid". Maybe she will think before she opens her mouth again. God, I am sorry, I am on a soap box right now, but it absolutely infuriates me how absolutely dumb / inconsiderate some people can be.

I'm somewhere in the middle and have been both fat and skinny at different times in my life. I'm sorry this is happening to you.
I've thought about this a bit, and I think I came up with a few possible reasons.
First really skinny people sometimes might have hormone problems or chemical imbalances. My husband told me how he feels about his ex-wife "I never want to see another nasty bony woman again." He thinks that all the really bony ones have serious psychological problems and that runway models look like serial killers. Of course it's an exaggeration, but some of them are very nasty so he might be partially right about them.
I'm not talking about everyone, but a lot of them don't eat right all, so their bodies are probably chemical imbalanced. Also, they could be skeletal because they are on drugs. Please don't feel bad, because you did nothing.
Next, I think some people are superstitious about things like that. It's almost as if they think being fat is contageous. It's not logical but it's out there.
Finally, our society puts so little value on heavier people or older people. If you're overweight or over 50, it's almost like you're invisible. You know all about the Hollywood norms that are forced on us. If you look at European movies or independent films, you will see that often older women have a useful role, perhaps even a sexy one. Now days, so many people in the US are overweight that it should surprise no one that not all of us are 16 and malnourished.
Finally, if you listen to the talk programs on the radio, you will notice that hatred for fat people is not only tolerated but actively encouraged. No one is allowed to be a racist or against any ethnic minorities or gays, but it's perfectly acceptible to hate fat people andf encourage discrimination against them. Probably, old people, fat people and smokers are fair targets (in the opinion of some) for our pent up hostility and frustration. It's so wrong, and I think everyone should get your full respect, until they do something to you (other than just existing) to prove they are not worthy.
The most important questions are: How do you feel about yourself? How does your spouse feel about you? AND Are you healthy? If not is there something you can do to improve the situation? The rest of it is not anyone's business. You did the right thing asking her why she was so rude and ignorant. She needed to hear it, and I'm sorry if you were stressed out having to tell her.

OMG, I'm so sorry. Well, for whatever reason, people think it's okay to make you feel worthless if you're fat. Never mind if they are mean, rude, and have a drug or drinking problem. Those things don't necessarily need to be shown to the world all the time like being fat does. It is so messed up. Hold your head high and realize you're a better person than her.

I don't think we can generalize. Some people are rude, somepeople are not.
When I was thinner it bothered this crabby lady at work. She always used to tell me I needed to gain weight and I must be doing something unhealthy to stay that skinny. I responded that just because she's unhappy with her weight not to take it out on me and instead of being so rude to go do something about it.
To me telling a thin person they are too thin, is just as rude ans telling a fat person they are too fat.

Well i am skinny, and i've had a girl come up to me and tell me to 'eat a burger or something b%*$h'. I dont think you should generalise like that. I have no problem with fat ppl and spent most of my teenage years trying to put on weight. Some people are just nasty for the sake of it.

She was more concerned about your health. Why do fat people continue to get fatter and not try and loose weight. (most anyways). Please don't take it harshly because a lot of people care and think about your heart / diebetes etc. issues. They are not saying anything wrong with you as and individual but rather feel they must say something. Unless you have a glandular problem (which is not that many percentage wise) then there is no reason why you can't try to be a little more healthier.

My guess would be immaturity and stupidity. Never judge a book by its cover, and never judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes.
I think a LOT of thin/average size people are under the impression that all fat people have to do is stop eating so much and lose weight. They must think it's easy, and that fat people are lazy for not doing it. Little do they know...

I have suffered from the same thing. One time I was walking with my baby in a stroller down the street, minding my own business, when a 20-something male yelled--"You're walking the wrong direction--Denny's is THAT way!!"
It hurt, but I just figured I should be happy that I am not like him!
Don't let ignorant fools get you down.

Because in this country, overweight people(though the majority) are villified.Being chubby when I was little but having become thin in my teen years,I notice a difference in how I am treated. However,if you are happy with yourself than you can't pay attention to ignorant people. If you aren't happy with yourself, you have to work towards a change.

Many people--some skinny and some not-so-skinny--are just plain rude individuals. Don't waste your time or energy being upset with such people.
