They say that you should avoid laying on your back because it can decrease the blood flow to the placenta which can affect the baby. You can put a pillow behind you when you sleep to prevent rolling over and laying flat on your back.

Lying FLAT on your back after the first trimester can cut off circulation to the baby, there is a major artery that the baby could lay and put pressure on, but it can also make it hard for some woman to breathe (not as a health hazard, simply as yet another pregnancy discomfort) and can put pressure on the back as well. Flat on the back can also be a difficult position to rise from if you are huge, which is why exercises that require you to be laying down are discouraged!
The best position is on your left side, this generally relieves any pressure or pain the extra wieght is causing on your back and allows blood flow to circulate better. This position is also recomended to relive pain due to sciatica. But if you really feel more comfortable on your back, just don't lay flat. keep a few pillows handy to prop up on and you should be fine

It is not recommended that you lay on your back for extended periods of time after 16 weeks because the pressure of the baby is placed directly onto the femoral artery and also the intestines of the mother. So it can reduce oxygen flow because not enough blood can circulate to the fetus. Laying on the left side is recommended to alleviate this problem.

They say after like 20 weeks when your belly starts getting back that if you lay flat on your back it can decrease blood circulation to your legs and feet and can cause or increase swelling. They suggest elevating your feet and legs, or laying at an incline with your back up a little bit.

This is directly from my doctor that I had while I was pregnant.

Sleeping on your back is perfectly OK, provided you are comfortable doing so. Many pregnant women are not to comfortable on their back,as it is sometimes harder to breath that way as the pregnancy progresses. As a matter of fact, sleeping at all is a good trick in the last few weeks of pregnancy. For some women that's even in a semi-sitting position at the end of pregnancy.

When you lie on your back it can make your circulation worse and make you light headed. It is also better to lie on your side later in pregnancy because the baby will get more oxygen that way. When I was pregnant I had to lie on my side because I had high blood pressure and was on meds for it and when I lied on my bac I felt so lightheaded like I was gonna pass out.

Nope if you are having morning sickness .... the sight of you puking makes your hubby 'off' .... not to mention when your tummy are 'big' at that time, your hubby will also be put off by your body ... also, for those having their first child, we always put the safety of our unborn child first and so the thought of making love during pregnancy always come with with a nagging fear that something bad might happen to the unborn child (although they are books and advice saying that it is ok to do so between the 3rd month till the 8th month of pregnancy) ... they are also stories that unprotective sex can cause complication to the unborn child but I wouldn't want to write anything on that ...

I asked the same thing of my doctor as I sometimes sleep on my back. He said I would pass out before anything happened to the baby. PLUS - having been pregnant twice.......it's not comfortable, and, the further along you get - hard to breathe.
