I was told that, since I was not circumsized when I was born, that I have to have an actual surgery now?! How long does this take (as in, how long will I be out of sexual activity and work)...and is it painful?

i had it done at 21. The procedure took about 20 minutes and was done under local anesthesia. I was up and running in about a month. During that month every erection was pain full, but i got something to sniff to make the erection go away. I'm glad i had it done and for the most part sex is the same. the only difference is that my head doesn't receive extra stimulation from the foreskin.

Well, either way it's surgery - on a child or an adult. You would only need a circumcision if there was a specific medical condition, or you have joined a religion that requires it. Normal healthy adults do not 'need' a circumcision.

In fact, only about 40% of male infants are now circumcised in the US. There is a continuing trend to NOT circumcise.

Circumcision does not promote cleanliness, or guard against STDs. It does reduce sensitivity of the head of the penis, and removes nerve endings from the shaft of the penis, further reducing sensitivity.

The American Medical Assocation and the American Paediactric Association have both stated there is no need to perform this operation routinely; it should only be used to resolve specific medical conditions.

If you do have it done, it will be painful while healing. You may be given drugs to prevent erections which might open the wound during the healing process. After about a month you should be healed and ready to have sex.

Whoever told you that doesn't know better. Unless you're having serious problems with your foreskin - e.g. very often recurring irritations/infections, extreme phimosis, pain on erection, etc - then you do NOT need a circumcision.

If your foreskin is working fine right now and you're content with it, then don't get circumcised. Even if there's a problem with it there are usually non-surgical alternatives that work well.

Anyway, circumcisions take less than an hour, you probably won't be able to do anything sexually for a few weeks, and yes, it'll hurt (mostly likely).
