I don't want to purchase something harsh that will damage the finish or the paint. I kind of want to know something homemade that will work quick and do just as a good job as those ones you purcahse at home.

For the outside Mr Clean and warm water and elbow grease. The grill it self if it is cast iron just crank the burners on high with the lid closed for about 10-15 min and the heat will burn the grease and food off.
This is the recommended way by the manufacturer for the inside of the grill.

What I have found to work very well if you do it everytime you use it is just get some paper towels and cooking oil, I usually use olive oil although it is a huge waste I just dont keep much of anything else in the house. Just turn on the grill give it just a couple minutes to warm up a little and then pour the oil on the paper towels generously (you can also use a small terry cloth towel if you keep lots around like I do) an just wipe the grill down. Some area may require more attention than others but it works well pluse it will season the grill and keep the food from sticking. This is of course assuming it is porceline coated.

If it is really bad and you need to clean it thouroughly before you use it I usually will take it to the tub or shower and just ues really hot water and soap and a semi-abrasive sponge.

Good luck!

Welcome to the Weber World!! Good stuff. Check out the two sites below. The first is a step-by-step, but it does say to use spray-on oven cleaner. The second is tips from users, and a lot of them use "just home" stuff, so you may find things there that you want to use. Give it a go and have fun!!
