This saying arises because a lot of times, something will happen, through various circumstances, that will be so profound, and unexpected, that we delude ourselves in to believing that our imaginations could have not come up with the same.
I'm not sure about you, but when my imagination is unbridled (dreaming), my fiction is by far stranger than any reality I've ever come across. I think that is mostly because the things I find myself couldn't happen in a 3 dimensional reality, but none the less, are strange.

Surely does feel that way sometimes. At least fiction is just that - truth can hurt and destroy people.

most of the time...yes! But fiction is sometimes more pleasing- thats why so many people lie to themselves.

YES, BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE SOMEWHAT SCARED OF THE TRUTH! WE AS PEOPLE LIKE TO THINK THAT WE HAVE EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL, BUT AT THE SAME TIME NOT AWARE OF HIGHER POWERS THAT ARE WORKING AROUND US! THEY DON'T SEE THE DEMONS AND DEVILS WALKING TO AND FRO IN THE EARTH TORTURING AND SEEKING WHOM THEY MAY DEVOUR, NOR DO WE SEE THE ANGELS THAT THE LORD HAS SENT TO WATCH OVER HIS CHILDREN! PEOPLE TEND TO STAY AWAY FROM THINGS THAT THEY HAVE KNOW CONTROL OVER WHICH IS THE TRUTH!
