no, the United States does not have a "conscript" military. and at this time selective service has not been reinstated either.

As has been said, there's no mandatory drafting into the military. Everyone that enters the military knows that it could mean their life because of what's happening around the world. However, everyone is also trained before they see any conflict. Military life can be rough but it can also be surprisingly good, too. There is no such thing as military code word for "Fight (maybe DIE) For Your Country." Having spent a decade in the military, it was spent in teamwork, trust and cooperation with others. Think of it this way: Without our military and our leaders and our form of government, you wouldn't be able to say what you just asked without pain or consequences. If you want to know more ask someone in the military.

If you stop and talk to a soldier, they will tell you the real story. 99% of the soldiers sign up for their country. They believe in it. Of course there are the few looking for the free lunch of education etc but when they sign up, they are obligated. There is no secret. The military has only one purpose- To Fight, To destroy any enemy of the greatest country in the world, United States of America. The alphabet networks hate Pres Bush. I don't like how he is conducting some of the affairs such as restraining our Soldiers from finishing this war because they can ! But I do not hate Pres Bush to the point that I will distort the truth. Honestly the war should be over but politics again.
Off point a little. Our soldiers know what they are signing up for. In fact, they are so poorly underpaid that they do not sign up to get rich. It is disgraceful what our soldiers are paid and how they are treated monetarily especially if they God Forbid, get severally disabled. That is our crime as citizens for letting it happen. Our soldiers, 99% do sign up because they love this country. Im an 'old' man unfortunately because I would join up. Too young for Vietnam - in hindsight that was a blessing because the politicians were killing our men like the same are killing our soldiers now. Military has one purpose. Its an idiot who believes in peace and love only. There is evil. Thankfully we do have soldiers who VOLUNTARILY sign up for the RIGHT reasons....

There is NO mandatory military service in the U.S. and never has been.
The draft has been utilized in the past, but that is different.
The draft law expired over 20 years ago and has not been removed, so without a congressional vote, no one can be forced into the U.S. military.
All those serving in the Armed Forces today volunteered for service.

It is mandatory that all males must sign up for the draft in the US.
Congress can instill the draft at any time and call all males between 18 and 23 to be in the military.

Excellent point!
The problem is that the media hates Bush. No matter what he does, they will spin it to make him look bad. As the old saying goes, "damned if you do, damned if you don't."
Why is it that 99% of the complaining about how we need to get out is from people who hate President Bush? Gee, is that just a coincidence? They couldn't be using the sacrifice of these soldiers to their political gain, could they? That would just be so sick and wrong...

It may not be LEGALLY MANDATORY but, I personally know of 4 men and 1 woman who signed up for purely economic reasons. They knew full well what was happening but didn;t feel that they had a choice. 3 of them are married and have children. Thank fully, they returned home safely.

Errr, sweetheart...the people Bush is accused of killing arent Americans soldiers, they are all the thousands of ordinary civilians who have died in US military actions in the last few years.
And, guess what? Their only crime was living in the same country we wanted to attack.

No, it's strictly a volunteer armed force.
No draft.
Everyone who goes in knows exactly what the deal is and what could happen.
