What is the best brand of sewing machine for mid-level sewing practices - ie anime costumes?

I have been sewing Anime costumes for two and a half years now. I have a low end Brother sewing machine, and I am looking for a better one to suit what I make. My price range is under $500. I like the computerized ones that have the stitch memory capability, and I am looking for one that is easy to use and care for.
