I did just this the other day. It was a short line, the "big" stall was the only open one. I used it, quickly. And was chastised upon exit by a slightly handicapped person who had entered the restroom after I entered the stall. I felt it was unfair to the rest of the people in line to hold up the line, and felt unfairly chastised.

Yes, but quickly finish if one enters.

1) Put this question in the "Etiquette" section where it belongs.

2) You are entirely correct in using the bathroom. The handicapped stall isn't RESERVED for handicapped folk, it is there for their convenience when they go to the bathroom. It isn't a "members only" club. There is no reason for the rest of the population to stand there waiting to go to the bathroom when there is a perfectly good bathroom sitting there unused and in the entire scheme of humans in this country, not a huge percentage of them are handicapped.

3) That said, if you are in line and all the stalls are full and a handicapped person comes in, you should defer the handicapped stall to them when it opens up. One never knows how long a handicapped person can wait to use the bathroom and there is only the one for their use.

Thus, they can wait 30 seconds for someone to finish up, but they shouldn't have to wait 10 minutes for hte entire line to process.

It seems that I have a little different perspective on this than the majority. Handicapped does not mean just those who depend upon a wheelchair, or are even visibly handicapped. There are people who have heart or lung conditions that require they not stand or walk for long periods of time. And many elderly people are handicapped, but too proud to make an issue of it. You can't tell that they are handicapped, and most would feel embarrassed to let you know. Keep the line, the parking spaces, and the seats on public transportation free to those people who are not visibly handicapped, but are limited nonetheless.

Yes. However, if there is a handicap person, even in the back of the line, they should be able to take the stall as soon as it becomes vacant, even if that means cutting line.

Yes. Currently I have a broken foot in a cast. I didn't want to walk really far to the women's restroom at the local movie theater, so I used a handicapped one.

Go ahead. It's not like you're taking a parking space and have no disabled placard in your car!!

Yes because sometimes there aren't any empty stalls, and there's a lot fewer handicapped people than fully capable people, the chances of them coming are very slim.

That stall is to accommodate disabled but can be used by anyone. If someone disabled is in the rest room waiting make sure you allow them to go first since sometimes it's more difficult for them to do this in public rest rooms.

I say yes. That stall isn't for the exclusive use of the handicapped. It's able to accommodate everyone.
