If you are completeley lost on computers and don't know anything you need to be ready to spend a lot of money and a lot of time studying. To obtain these certifications studying is the key here. Even those who study and research all the material don't pass these test. There are differences between a certificate and lets say a degree. In a certificate you are just being taught a very narrow understanding of a system that at that economic period is considered the industrial standard. And example is CCNA (cisco certified network administrator). If cisco went out of business your out of luck LOL. If another company creates another routher that is better then Cisco's your going to lose your job soon. Certificates don't teach a general education or full theory like you would obtian if you went through a 4-year degree. A 4-year degree last forever this is because you are taught theory and ways to tackle future problems. Even if the principle changes compleley your mind is strong based on the fact that you studied for 4 years which increases your mental capacity. Another issue with certificates is the fact that you have to keep getting them. If another thing comes out from that company you have to recert yourself. And if you are interested in taking test for the rest of your life that may not be your thing.

I don't think there is such a thing as Microsoft certification. You could try the FCC or some group like that.
