Well My mother has had it occasionally, since she was a teen and has had it mildly ever since. I've been showing the symptoms. I'm a teenager and I usually get 9 to 10 hours of sleep (per day) over the summer, but for the past 4 to 5 days I've only been getting 5 to 6 hours of sleep. I know stress is one of the causes of Insomnia and I have been stressed about school starting back and I have to take my test to get my permit in a few days, so I've been worrying about that too. I also have flashbacks every now and then about things in my childhood, which will cause me to cry in my sleep or cry when I wake up (like 4 or 5 am) and it's hard to go back to sleep. What is causing me to not get enough sleep? Is it mild insomnia, or something else? I need to know because I'm an honor student and starting my sophmore year in highschool and I'm going to need more then 5 hours of sleep.

I can honestly say that you don't have a mild case of insomnia, yet. However, you are getting stress induced nightmares (which may or may not be vivid causing you to wake up in the middle of the night or to be restless all night). I would have you take notice of any unnecessary stress in your life (as you are far too young to be stressing out about so many things). For starters school hasn't started yet, therefore you should push it out of your mind. Your permit test is a big deal to you, but don't make passing it (or driving for that matter) a chore. I would have you drink a cup of warm milk or there is a sleepy-time tea you can get at any pharmacy. Drink only one cup though, as you do not want to interrupt your night's sleep to go to the loo. Also you want to get into a set routine when you get ready for bed (ie brush your teeth, shower, read a book, etc.), and stick to it. If you do this routine every time you get ready for bed your body will start to catch on to it and therefore start to prepare itself for sleep (ie the mind/body start to relax, your body releases certain chemicals that induce sleep, etc.) If none of these work then I would seek medical and or psychological help. But overall I'd say you need to bring down your negative stress level and up your relaxation.

There are several things you can do that are called "sleep hygiene" that can help with insomnia: 1. only go to bed when you are tired 2. get up about the same time everyday (even weekends) 3. avoid caffeinated beverages after lunchtime 4. do not use your bed for anything but sleep (ie, don't lay on your bed to read or study) 5. exercising regularly will improve your sleep If you've exhausted your other options, talk to your family doctor about prescription medications. There are several excellent medications that help you get a good night's sleep without making you feel groggy the next day. Taking a prescription sleep medication for sometimes a couple weeks can be enough to get your sleep cycle back on track. Best of Luck!

It sounds like you may have more problems than people on here can help you with. Im not sure what your flashbacks are from but you might want to see a doctor. But anyways I used to have trouble sleeping when I was younger and it was my first day at a new school (switched schools a lot) or if I was nervous for an upcomming event. And when I wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom or something it can be hard to go back to sleep.

if you live in a region where the weather has been brutal that can cause you to lose sleep you should not sleep during the day because when you start school you are going to get sleepy at the time you normally sleep stick to the same routine everyday wake up and go to bed the same time avoid smoking chocolate caffine before bed these things keep you up and occupy your time during the day go for a brisk walk read a book do excersices anything to stay awake you will have enuf to do during the day when you start school and yes you are suffering from sleep probs
