Autumn: you are dead wrong. If your statement were true, then college professors would rule the world. Fact is real estate salespeople make a bundle and most of them haven't read a single book. You probably read that in one of your "page turners"

For the same reason people watch sports or reality TV shows.
There's nothing to learn, just an easy, entertaining way of passing the time - and reading romance may lead to reading Jane Austen, reading action novels may lead to reading Moby Dick.
Relax - you may enjoy it.

Eh, i believe the term is "page turners", and reading an interesting novel is much more beneficial than letting your mind slowly rot in front of the television. Besides, there's actually a connection between the number of words you read in a day and the amount of money you make, regardless of what those words are.

Sometimes you want candy but most of the time you should eat more sensibly. Many novels lack depth, but satisfy the readers need for candy in book form.
I think of it only as a problem if someone gets hooked just on the candy. Book candy has the reverse effect from real candy. Instead of being fattening, it starves the mind when it is an exclusive diet.

Actually it is ' Page Turners'.....where you really want to find out what is happening so you just keep reading and turning the pages.
Some people actually read for fun.

Even "page burners" need research for backgrounds, scientific info, etc. While you're reading that entertaining book, you're picking up odd bits of data that you might find useful someday.

There are so many bad things going on in the world that it is nice to set back and escape with a good book.

Entertainment is not a waste of time. It isn't necessary to be learning something ALL the time. Recreation is good for the soul.

Pure entertainment value, besides it's better than watching reality TV.

Sometimes your brain just needs a rest from learning and you need to read something that will teach you absolutely nothing.
