I have a ball python. What should I name him? How many mice do they eat a week? I've never had a snake before, so could you give me some info on taking care of it?

First of all, I wish you would have done all the research before getting a pet. Quite often animals will suffer, epecially reptiles, because people don't know anything about them before buying them.

Second, do NOT get a heat rock. Heat rocks are notorious for burning snakes. Balls need certain requirements in order to thrive including a tank suitable for its size, a temperature gradient from the low 80s to the low 90s, fresh water, preferably two identical hides that are small enough for them to fit in snugly (one on each end of the the cage), and an appropriate sized meal once a week. Please check out this caresheet for all the details and feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions. http://ball-pythons.net/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&id=52

There are a million websites like that out there about how to take care of them, since they're a pretty common pet. Heat rocks are important. The number of mice changes as they grow bigger. We found out not to feed them rats though, even when they get big, because rats sometimes bite the snake. I like the name Penelope.

The name is your choice and it depends upon his age what his diet should consist of.

I had a red tailed boa constrictor, so feel free to send me an email and I'll be happy to help you all that I can.

Good luck! *S*
