It's so hard to pick a favorite, but I guess I'll say "To Kill a Mockingbird," by Harper Lee. I remember the first time I read it, I was just so emotionally affected by it.

I have my top three list:
The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon
I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb
The Power of One is a very famous book, it's powerful and moving, with emotions that run deeper than the Nile.
Curious Incident (as I call it) is easily the most creative book I've ever come across. Please, please read this book. It's beautifully written, warm and often funny, Mark Haddon creates a new kind of hero.
I Know This Much is True is chillingly realistic. It made me cry so often I thought I was a stereotypical woman at a wedding! It has the best ending I have ever witnessed.
Please read these books, I think reading is one of the best things a person can do for themselves, and these three books are outstanding.

Lev Tolstoj War and Peace
or just anything from him. Trust me, it's long, and sometimes you think it's boring, but it worth it! I haven't read such a masterpiece, the characters are so well written, and everything seams so real, it's like that whole world came to life before your eyes! I know that some people may consider it as an over-talked novel, but i do believe that it's a really good book, but if you want something light and easy, it's Lord of the Rings.... :-)

"Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein because it was the first widely distributed book to come after the 50s and declare that perhaps much of the methods and processes of our world are flawed. By forcing the reader to see our world from a non-resident's perspective, it is easier to objectively assess our society's strength and flaws.
A close second is "The Space Merchants" by CM Cornbluth and Frederick Pohl. This book details the issues created by classism and how advertising and spin ensure that only the worst types of businessmen have any chance in the ethics vacuum that has become western commerce.
I selected these two because they carry a message for the betterment of all humanity, not one particular segment.

The Davinci Code.
Not for any religious or anti-religious reasons, just because it was a great story with a lot of suspense. I just couldn't wait to turn the next page!
The only other book I ever felt that way about was Jurassic Park (before it was made into a movie). I guess I like suspense.

"The Source," by James Michener. I have a strong interest in anthropology, archaeology, and ancient history. This book touched intensely on all of these. The edition I had was more than 1,000 pages long; but I could hardly put the book down to eat or sleep. Additionally, it was obvious that Michener had done his homework: he had exclusively researched material for this book for twelve years.

the best book i have ever read is the bible. its the best book for me because whenever i am sad and down i can always turn to it for comforting words. it also shows me how to live life everyday as ur last and how what to expect in times to come. i have also lernt all the stuff men and women need to know about marriage and most importantly it makes me build a relationship with god and his angels so my soul wil be saved and my name may be written in the lamb book of life. it is also my sword and my compass and gives me a good healing maybe it would heal u too.

The Rescue by Nicolas Sparks
Because from beginning to end it had me captured. I laughed and cried and more. It was a good story about a single mother trying to get through the obstacles of raising a special child and finding love in the process. There is more to it but I loved it

I rather enjoyed the Dune series by frank herbert. Of all the sci fi ive read, that series does the best at implementing religion and government, two things which will continue no matter what technology level humans get to.
