Straight edge (sometimes abbreviated to sXe or SxE) is a lifestyle and (counter cultural) subculture, closely associated with punk and hardcore punk music. It advocates abstinence from tobacco, alcohol, and recreational drug use—especially psychoactive and stimulant drug use. Some straight edgers also abstain from promiscuous sexual behavior and caffeine.

Originally inspired by the punk band Minor Threat, it has spread around the world, but is most popular in industrialized Western societies with a large middle-class—such as United States, Canada, countries of Western Europe, and Australia. Although straight edgers do not necessarily identify with a particular world view on social or political issues, many do subscribe to precepts associated with anarchism, vegetarianism–veganism, socialism, environmentalism, and the deep ecology movement.

It used to mean that a person did not use drugs or alcohol. It became a neo nazi thing during the late '80's and into the 1990's. Eon Mackay started straight edge (singer for Minor Threat) as a movement against drugs and alcohol. Emo kids that have now-a-days latched onto this idea seem to misuse the term as well as the neo nazi's did. The emo kids seem to think it's an ok to be gay or lesbian as long as they do not drink or use drugs. It really was just a movement against drugs and alcohol usage itself, and not something that had a political motive to make segments of the population (such as neo nazi's or the gay community) look as though they were puritanical/or innocent.

It means that a person refrains from drug & alcohol use completely. It also has conotations with it that imply the person is cool with the scene & hangs out with users, but just doesn't partake his or her self in the "party scene". Like, she'll go to the party & be fun to hang out with all the drug/alcohol users but stay sober the whole time. Get it? Got it? Good, now go enjoy this fine summer weekend. :)

To follow the "normal" path that society has set. Not to bend in any way. It is the same philosophy as following the "straight and narrow" path.

it means your vegan, don't drink, smoke, or do drugs, and you listen to hardcore music. in the 80's the music was very fast. in the early 90's it largely slowed down and incorporated metal influences.
