Yes you have to remove McAfee before you install any other antivirus software. Don't just go to contol panel and add/remove programs. Click start, then search, then do a word search for McAfee. This will delete all files. Then install your new software. Otherwise you will either have a conflict or the new software will read the other antivirus as a virus. I personally have tried quite a few of the free antivirus softwares and I have never yet found one that did its job. I had to end up paying for antivirus and the first scan turned up over 30 viruses that the free software had not unearthed. I use Verizon Internet Security Suite and I am finally happy with my antivirus.

Avg is one of the best available antivirus, it can heal most of the infected files, more than what Mcafee can quaratine, or clean. It is availble as a free trial downloader, which does not has trial expiry period.
For spyware, and firewall zone alarm is good solution.
A lot of people search free serials and cracks on google to use McAfee even after expiration, however that is not advisable.

Well, for anti-virus, a good free one that is updated just about daily (for free), is AVG from Grisoft.

For firewalls, a good choice is Kerio Personal Firewall. Apparently it was free at one point, and I'm not very sure if it still is. It was free when I downloaded it about a year or so ago.

Another free firewall is ZoneAlarm.

All of these are free for personal home use of course, and all can be upgraded for a price. But the free versions of them work very well, and I personally would recommend the 3 I mentioned.

If you have Windows XP you can enable their firewall or use Zone Alarm. For anti virus software, use Avast! Home Edition. It works really well. And yes you do have to remove Mcafee.

You would not need to remove McAfee, but it is HIGHLY recommended by both me and Windows. If you are looking for a good anti-virus/web protector; I would recommend avast! You have to get a yearly subscribtion for it, and the subscribtions are free.

For the program download go here:http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe

For the registration for a subscribtion, go here:http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG

Don't forget, it is COMPLETELY free.

Hope it helps!
