I am a little worried..I am nearly 27 weeks pregnant and have been through an extraordinary amount of stress in the last few days..
My right foot, ankle, and lower leg suddenly got VERY swollen last night, within a period of a few hours. My face is a little puffy, I have a severe headache, and I keep seeing little white dots of light, as if a migraine is starting. I have not had any problems with swelling up until now. I did a little research and it mentioned something about preeclampsia and toxemia. Has anyone had this before, what should I expect when I go to the doctor's? This does not seem to be normal for me..Could it just be the stress and/or weather?

I have lots of experience with ecampsia as a L&D nurse, I would call L&D or your doctors and ask them to do a blood pressure test and bloodwork, you are going to get more stressed out by searching and trying to diagnose yourself online.
Better safe then sorry.
Even this time I would say go to the hospital.

I had preeclampsia in my 40th week of pregnancy. My legs were so swollen, and I couldn't fit into my shoes anymore. When you pressed a finger onto my leg, it left an indentation. There was also protein in my urine, and by blood pressure was elevated. I had been dilated to 2 or 3-cm for about 2 weeks prior, so the doctors ended up inducing my labor. Went really quick...only 3 hours and my little bundle was out. Tiny though, only 5 lbs 12 oz (docs said at least a 7 pounder). I gained 40 lbs with the pregnancy, about 15 of it in the last month. It was all water weight...I only had about 15 lbs to lose after I went home to get back to prepregnancy weight.
Anyway, in your case I would go to the OB as soon as possible. You will probably be put on bedrest for the rest of your pregnancy, and unfortunately it may be in the hospital so they can observe you. They will try to prevent labor since you're only 27 weeks. I'm pregnant with #2 right now, and I am going to assume that I will be induced again because of my past history. Please take it easy, and go see your doctor as soon as you can. Good luck to you!!

Preeclampsia is due to high blood pressure. You may want to call your doctor and mention your symptons. I had high blood pressure which led to preeclampsia with my first child. I was on no blood pressure meds and my b.p. was high the whole time. I went in for an appointment and they found high amounts of protein in my urine. The only cure is to give birth. With my second pregnancy I was on b.p. meds and my b.p. stayed under control. My doc chose to induce 1 week early though just to make sure I didnt develop a problem. Good Luck!!!

I have no idea if I might believe your healthcare professional.

I had preclampsia. If it's that bad you better get to the hospital. If your under stress it could be your blood pressure. You will have to have a c-section if you are really swollen. I didn't have any dots or headaches but I was blown up like a balloon. The baby will be fine but it's your health they are concern about.

Please seek assistance right away. Peeclampsia is basically everything you have described in your message. This is a serious condition and needs to be controlled right away. High blood pressure can damage major organ in you and/or the baby. Please be safe rather than sorry. Call your health care professional right now! You have every right to be safe. If you are African American, this condition is sort of common. Stress could definitely be a factor to the elevated conditions. Again seek assistance now. Good luck.

Talk to your doctor immediately. They will check you BP and also take blood to check your kidney function, liver function and platelet count. If they do not like what they see they will admit you and possible put you on magnesium sulphate to prevent a seizure. Also at your baby's gestational age they will probably give it steroids to prepare you for early induction. Please do not worry - if you get yourself to your doctor you will be in good hands.
I had a suspected case (turned out to be essential hypertension) but I was on besdrest fr almost three weeks and was induced at 38 weeks. Good luck and stay well.
