It is actually derived from the French words:
"Respondez Sil Vous Plait" that means "Reply if you please".
People always mention this abbreviation at the bottom of an invitation card along with a phone number or address of the invitor as formality. This is a more polite way of asking each and every invitees about their avaibility for the occasion in advance. Incase, the invitee is not able or unavailable he/she is supposed to inform the invitor at the given phone number or the address in advance that why he /she can not make it and also the apology attached to it. It's actually made for the conveniences of both the Invitor as well as the invitee in the western culture..

R.S.V.P :- Repondez s'il vous plait. A french term which means "Please reply". It is normally written in letters asking people to give a reply to the letter sent and also in many invitations asking people to reply and specify whether they would be attending the function as mentioned in the invitation or not.(By the way, I'm sure my spelling is correct except for an " accent aigu" which will go above the 1st "e" in "Repondez".Sign is not there in my computer. I guess u got what u asked anyway.)Hope this helps.

This is from the French, "Repondez s'il vous plait", which means "Please Respond".

This should only be added to an invitation when an answer is required, although many people use it without knowing its purpose!

When used correctly, it means that an accurate count of people attending is needed, particularly in the case of a wedding or dinner.
