Well, first it depends where do you live. Second, do you really want to be a model or are you doing it just because everybody tells you (if I had done that I'd be a lawyer now...ahgrrrrrr). Third, unless you're lucky enough to find some real model answering your question here, I guess you should do some background on whatever modeling agencies and schools are in your area.

depends what type of moddelling you want to do, there are thousands of so called agents who will do nothing for you except take your money, remember when you work they pay you dont send off any money upfront for any photos /portfolios, go to a reputable established agency , advertising, model ,catologue agency, first if they do not hire direct then they will put u in touch with the firms that hire models for them , then you get a photographer to shoot your pictures, negoiate a fee for the pictures and pay a deposit of no more than 25% OF THE final FIGURE 25% on proof selection 50% on completion, try not to send photos through the post to a prospective agent , if the firm is a good one they will want to see you in person anyway.
do not go to meetings alone you dont know what you are walking into check everybody out first , ring back any contact phone number they give you, check at local business trading in the area
of your meeting before the day of the meeting, remember caution never killed anyone.good luck

I've done many model auditions, really. Few tips, don't accept any agency that asks you to pay first thing, you'll be able to pay them gradually (at least where I've auditioned). Some good ones are John Casablancas.

ive had the same problem, its safer to go with a well known agency, like elite or ford. You can show up on their open call days and theyll check you out, its worth a try.

i am a new face to modeling...done a couple of photo shoots and a magazine....but to first get started start and account on model mayhem or one model place! you will get photographs for free (tfp-time for prints) which means you give the photographer your time and they give you a c.d. of the pictures! it helps to get out there and then try an angency once you get going...and also it looks good if you are on time to photoshoots and stay fit and work out! hope i helped!
contact me if you have any questions.....and send some pics. and i'll tell you if you could get work!

As long as they don't ask you for money they should be fine. It would depend on where you live.
