1. Give yourself plenty of time to read and re-read your materials.
2. Work in a relaxing environment (could be a loud room -- whatever works for you).
3. Practice problems and homework - do as many as you can. Re-do if necessary.
4. Go to the library and read.
5. Write about what you know and what you've learned on the subject and reference your sources... keep good notes.
6. Eat a good diet and keep in good physical shape - it helps with your studying.
Don't: Rush, wait to the last minute, or expect the teacher's lectures will answer all your questions. Many teachers are idiots... they're just there for the job. Unfortunately.
Good Luck.

Stuff I wish someone told me before I went to university:
- This is gonna sound really stupid, but if it's a class you don't really like, you have to pretend you enjoy the material.. so you can say to yourself "G-damn, I know this stuff" even if you hate it with a passion
- Ask yourself the questions.. sometimes it helps to test yourself on the material
- If you're burning the midnight oil, cover your clock and close your blinds - turn on all your lights so you kinda fool yourself as to how late it is. I wouldn't recommend doing this but if you have to (*cough* like I did *cough*) then you have to. Sleep is really important though, especially before a test or exam.
- If it's a class where you have to memorize a lot of stuff, like biology, make queue cards out of all your notes, most likely one thing is related to another so if you can make the link between everything then do so
ex. human cell - human cell has mitochondria, nucleus.. from mitochondria you can make another branch to talk about its function (for respiration, etc.)
- If it's a class like math where there's a bunch of homework problems, do the problems - forget about memorizing notes because most likely the bulk of a test or exam will be solving problems
- avoid cramming if you can - when I was in first and second year I left everything to the last minute and I paid for it because I was out every night.. but when you do 1, 2 hours of work every night (problems, quick review of notes) then at least you save yourself that time at the end when the test comes
- i dunno about the music.. sometimes music helps me study, especially if i'm stressed.. this is a personal choice and it's more of a 'to each his / her own' kind of thing
Good luck, hope this helps.

people remember like 70% of what they hear, 50 % of what they read and 90 % of what they hear and read, so if u can, get someone to help you study. reading yourself and then being read to or reading with someone else will incread your knowledge. also, you should separate your notes by subject and use different colored highlighters to represent different topics. that always helped me. additionally, the average human attention span is only 45 minutes, so dont study any longer than that at one time. its been proven that your only burning yourself out by doing that. study 45 minutes, take a break and do something else for 10 minutes, and then come back to it for another 45.

Don't wait until the last minute(poor retention as well as poor grades)
Study with other people from your class...
Offer to tutor(brings you up to speed VERY quickly)
Writing down, and talking out loud about what your studying(when your studing) re-enforces the info to your brain.
Also, a good nights sleep before tests(bonus of NOT waiting till the last minute)
Oh yes, turn off the cell, TV, and any other gimmick or distraction
When I was in school, I seen some of my college classmates going out and partying on Friday night while I was doing Thermodynamics...guess who graduated? and got a good-paying career?
It's all about priorities...what's important to you.

I take 2 minute breaks every 15 minutes. It works like a charm and it eases the stress of studying. Sometimes I'll exercise, eat, or just sit there.

Study in a quiet place or with VERY LOW music. Make sure you're relaxed. If something's on your mind, take care of that first, then study.

You will study less if you do not cram but understand. Approach each subject as if you are communicating with another person.
