we did vocal warm ups. if u want to do it on your own u will definitely need a keyboard or a piano. we also sang songs from sheetmusic and practiced our scales. honestly they only work if u take them for a while. i wasnt taught anything new or anything i couldnt do on my own.

Vocal lessons not only help with singing and breathing. You learn how to project your voice without the use of a microphone, you learn how to sing from the diaphram and breathing using all of your lungs and not just the top. There are warm-ups and techinical work. If your local community college offers vocal classes, you should look into them. I found that this is a great way to take vocal lessons and it isn't that expensive.

In voice lessons, they help you learn to breathe and to support the breath with the muscle called the diaphragm.

They teach you how to use your breath and how to shape and form the voice.

They teach you resonance and timing

They teach you scales and give you lots of breathing exercises.

They show you by example such as practice singing and teach you music theory and some piano to accompany your voice.

They teach you proper speech and pronunciation

They teach you the mechanics of the throat, the nose, the ears and the way sound travels through the vocal chords

If they are any good at all they do anyway?

The human voice is the only living instrument. Learning how to use it is just as serious and just as important as learning every aspect of any other instrument.

Remember... BREATHE! Support your breath and you'll be fine!

warm up your voice daily, and before singing by singing scales to: la lal la , eee eee eee, ooh ooh ooh. Start off low and each time move up a half step (or a note up if u aren't familiar with music terms) until you almost max out.

Singing is the air coming from your diaphram, not just opening your mouth and letting sound come out. So to hit those high notes and really showcase your voice, make sure that air is exiting your mouth when you are singing.

Also when you see singers make that weird face like they smelled something bad by moving their nose and mouth up toward the top of their face, that movement helps not being flat on higher notes.

HOpe this helps. good luck

first you do your warm ups a-e-i-o-u. Then you do your scales: do re mi fa so la ti do. Then you sing from your diaphragm not through your nose. Pronouncing and dictation. Breathing control. Also if you are a performer, it helps to run and try and sing at the same time. Thats pretty much the basics.

They teach you to find your singing voice.

You sing, they correct you. You pay them. You sing some more. Repeat, until one of you decides you can't sing or you get a recording contract or both.
They don't cost that much, but choir at church or school is free.
Go for it.

In voice lessons they teach you how to sing better. They teach you rythyms and beat. Then you warm-up you sing melodies and songs to make your voice stronger.
