I know the OS X is Apple's current operating system, I use it.
But don't understand the reference to the external hard drive.
(I use one of those also).

it means you can run the OS X operating system from an external hard drive by installing the OS on the external hard drive, and booting from it.

external hard drives are the partitions i think

Usually this is a firewire drive properly set up for it.
