The car is a 1978 Mercury Zephyr and i can see break fluid on the rear right side of the car. I now realize I shouldn't drive it anywear but does anyone have an ideal what kind of things could be wrong with it?

The question really is can i fix a break leak my self before i take it to the shop,( safe some money ),you need to know if you can see where the leake comes from it may be a simple repair,if you are mechaniclly inclined you can fix it yourself.First look to see if you can see wet spots on break lines,or master cylinder,or take the rear tire off and see if your rear brakes are wet,ahh wheel cylinder needs replacing, brake lines can be corroded, front calipers are wet,may need caliper kit or new calipers. If there is a leak have someone push the brake peddle and observe to see if you can see where the fluid comes out from.If this cannot help then the best thing to do is,lrt a mechanic come and pick up your car and let them take it to a shop, this way you won't get too worried if your going to make it to the shop.Hope this helps.

I would not suggest it...if the liquid is leaking at all let alone fast like you say tht is a bad thing...your brakes could go at any time and cause injury or death to yourself or others...you should definately get a tow truck to come and get the car because brakes are not something you want to mess around with...they could go at any time with the brake fluid leaking..

put brake fluid in it, drive at a slow speed, stop every minute or two, depending on how far this shop is. dont go fast and if you do lose brakes, get off the gas, and try to drive on the sholder until you stop. if you have a mechanical emergency brake, use that but only if you lose foot brake. remember, its better to hurt your car, then it is to hurt someone else, so dont hit people. aim for that wall or something. lol

Wait wait wait.... everybody just chill out. You CAN drive your car to the repair shop, but you may have to use your emergency brake to slow down or stop if your regular brakes aren't working. The emergency brake operates seperately from the regular brakes via a cable that is directly attack. In other words, your emergency brake doesn't need brake fluid to work.

No don't drive your car anywhere. Sounds like the master cylinder is going out, or a brake line is cracked. Don't take the chance. Your life is worth more than a tow bill.

You're best bet would be a tow, however, you could theoretically fill it with fluid and then just drive there really slow, and it better be really really close, or stop and fill it with some more every so often.

it depends on how well you know how to drive and how far u have to go
if u feel ok to do it u still have your emergency brake caz it doesnt use the brake fluid
u can also slow down by gearing down
i have done it before but since your asking this question i wouldnt recomend it to ya.
its a lot easier for most to have it towed

This car is NOT safe to drive to the repair shop. Why take your life and the life of others in your hands unnecessarily?

how far away is the shop?
if its only like a mile and you can take backroads, you can always use your e-brake to stop.
or if its a brake line, get some rubber line, cut the line on either side of the broken spot, and slip on the rubber line. it'll be fine temporarily.

Are you serious? You already know the answer! Call a tow truck!

BTW, it's BRAKE fluid, not BREAK fluid. If you have no brakes, you will break your car, not brake it.
