Is this a Joke?

Of course it won't hurt it.
What kind of stupid question is this?

The engine may bog down trying to overcome the torque load and it may accelerate slowly, but, NO!

NO!

HELL NO!

I read some of the above answers.
Where do you guys dream up this crap?

You are shifting up when going 30mph? like from 4th to 5th?
no that will not hurt the transmission. It might be hard to get it into that gear though because you would have to have the engine moving very slow to match the wheels and gears.

You will not have alot of torque with the engine running so slow, so it would be hard to accelerate in 5th. it might save a tiny bit of gas too since the engine will be turning slower, but that will be negated if you have to floor it to get it to respond.

sorry mom, you are wrong this time

Yes. You are making the gears work very very hard, which can lead to wear or damage and breakage.

It also depends on the driving conditions. If you are coasting downhill, 5th might be ok. If you are accelerating at all, then 5th gear at that speed is a bad thing.

Sometimes when I am cruising at 25mph I have my truck in 5Th(over drive), when accelerating, I do it very slow as not to load up the engine. 30-35 as long as I am cruising and on level ground it stays in 5Th gear, if I have to accelerate fast I speed shift to the lowest gear needed. have +167000miles on my Dakota and operating in this manner has giving me NO problems. My MPG has increase from 16/17 to 19/20

I know a guy who drives a manual Wrangler and uses his fifth gear (OverDrive) while cruising between 35-40 mph with no problems. He says it saves him alot on gas mileage compared to using lower gears.

As far as I know it won't ruin ur tranny just don't do it all the time. And never try to take off in 5th I,m pretty sure that can't be good.

I don't think so but it does waste gas if you go too slow in a high gear. The odometer thing should stay above 2, otherwise you're probably going too slow. It also depends on how high your car is geared.

No, it won't ruin it, However, the opposite is true. Don't put your car in 1st if you're going 60 mph.

no, i just use gear 1-3-5 on my car, its saves u to shift 2 times (im verry lazy) and it save fuel as u drive on less rpm.
but u would not care about that cause yr american.
anyway, its ok for yr car
