When Tony used to run USAC he was known for
1. smoking his tires and
2. blowing up engines thus he acquired the name Smoke. He really likes the nickname too by the way.

Tony Stewart earned his nickname while driving in the USAC series. He would always spin his tires creating smoke. When he moved to IRL he use to either blow an engine and have smoke come from the back, or win the race.

Because you can't catch Smoke, all I really know is he already had the nickname when he got to NASCAR.I assume it has something to do with the fact that all the other competitors could see of him was his smoke or something to that effect. At any rate it fits him very well.Maybe Smoke's Girl will see this question,I'm sure she knows the story behind the nick name.
