my 3rd grader has a school project due monday and we need help. he bought his paper home today with the requirements for the project. he has to make a model, poster, etc showing how atoms come together to form the earth and the link between the atoms making up earth and the atoms that form our human teeth! This makes no sense to me! I feel stupid because this is a 3rd grade project and i'm an adult! what do i do?

OK... atoms are the building blocks of all stuff. atoms are the periodic table ... think hydrogen, oxygen, lead, nickel etc...

now those get combined to make a compound... say H2O which is two Hydrogens combined with one Oxygen to make water... and CO2 which is one carbon and 2 Oxygens to make Carbon dioxide

water and CO2 are in the earth/soil but so are many many other compounds...

you could keep it simple... do you have a Lego set???

if so each tiny block is an atom... combine a few of those say 2 red and 1 white to represent water... make several and make sure they look the same... now make CO2 with 2 white and one blue...

OK how is that similar to atoms in teeth... well what compounds are in teeth??? Teeth are made of very complex compounds and these compounds are huge ( think all your lego blocks in one big massive building)... I don't think you could actually make tooth compounds with Lego's... but you can just explain that you could make it if you have a lego block to represent each element form the periodic chart you could put them in certain combinations to represent the things that make up a tooth...

this is a really big project for a third grade student...

Atoms do not form human teeth. Have you investigated that this school is a positive role model for your child? It shouldn't make sense and you should go to the school and tell them you refuse to allow your 3rd grader to be taught such rubbish! THIRD grade? gosh.

One wonderful why to asisst your
child and you both learn the project.
Go to the library and do some research
on the Atoms. This is a terrific way
to find how some students even at
this level learn. A drawing is even
going to assist him. Can he get
assistance from one of his
classmates?
