When you begin to question how much is too much, you are probably drinking too much. When you start thinking your consumption is "under control," it probably means that it's not.
Most things in moderation are okay and often life enriching, alcohol included. Favorable health effects run on par with a small glass of red wine with dinner -- that is: no buzz, not hard alc's.
Periodically catching a buzz is fun. Drinking alcohol more evenings than not, getting loaded most weekends, drinking alone... is alcoholism. It's a problem and it's not at all healthy for anyone, especially those who love you.
There are plenty of highly functioning alcoholics and drug addicts -- well, outside of home and without healthy personal relationships, that is.

I remember reading recently that those studies about moderate amounts of alcohol being healtheir than not drinking at all .. were flawed .. something to do with the fact that the way the questions were laid out .. apparently people who had STOPPED drinking answered the question Do you drink with a No .. and since those people tend not to have such great health, that brought down the percentage of (presumably) "non drinkers" having great health.
Something like that.
Oh and yes, alcoholism is the word for an addiction or problem with alcohol .. if consumption is moderate and well-under-control then it's not alcoholism. Of course, depends what you describe as well-under-control. I've known a lot of raving alcoholics who were convinced they had no problem with drinking at all.

Yes, drug addiction afflicts people in different ways on different levels.
Some people have extreme drug addiction, some have moderate, in spite of what society says.
There are functioning alcoholics who hold good paying jobs (just look at Washington DC and most of our law makers). There are highly functioning drug addicts, people who make incredible amounts of money and snort coke like crazy (some movie stars and rock stars)--not always with dire consequences also, despite what popular culture would like to promote. I knew a man who was a highly payed stock broker in NYC who shot up heroin every day. (disgusting as it is), He was a high functioning drug addict, if you saw him and spoke to him, you would never imagine he was a junky.
there are many drug addict (alcoholism included) stereotypes that usually pick the worst extreme of the lot. THis however, is completely false. I know many people who are high functioning alcoholics, live good lives, take care of their kids, go to work on time, never miss a deadline, do their job correctly and get payed high incomes. OUr culture demonizes drug use. However, not all drug users become addicted, not all addicts end up in the streets, this is just a fact.

If you have your alcoholism under control and that means you don't drink even one drop of alcohol ever again... then yes, you can be successful and prosperous. You just have to stay strong and focused. You're life isn't over because you have an addiction. Its just more complicated.

It usually goes hand in hand with the rich and successful but I do not believe that it could be considered a necessity for success or prosperity. We have all seen well to do people that think they have drinking under control and fall into the addiction trap. My answer reflects what I have watched unfold in life and it is not a habit to be played with.

Alcoholism is a addiction to alcohol.
It is not compatable with 'moderate and well-under-control'.
But I think some limited alcohol consumption is alright.

A bottle of beer, a shot of liquor or a glass of wine can always change the mood and disposition of a person because alcohol is a depressant.

I would think so. If someones drinking is under control, that person isn't an alcoholic.

everyone appears to be like better ingenious and powerful at the same time as challenged. fulfillment and prosperity are objectives, so once a delicate aspect of fulfillment and prosperity is attained, human beings will no longer attempt to advance. for the time of historic past that is for the period of situations of conflict that persons develop into inspired to advance their condition. The question is, what do you recommend with suggestions from function? i ought to assert that everybody appears to be like better powerful at the same time as challenged (smart), yet residing in adversity is stressfull. in case you equate function with well-being, happiness, and contentment, (as in the human body applications better) then obviously that comes once stressors are got rid of and contentment is done.
