Tell your parents you will have a lot going on in your life and make up stories about schools having guys come in with guns holding teachers and students hostage and that is dangerous without a reliable source of communication. My mom had to convince my sister to take her phone to school for those reasons (made-up)

Start listing reasons why it would be useful for you to have one. Tell them that its good to have it with you when you are out with your friends and they will be able to keep track of you more efficiently. Make sure you can convince them that you wont go over on minutes. If they say yes but offfer something you do not like, dont whine. Try to bargain with them in a non-babyish way.

First you need to find out why they won't help you to buy a basic one. They start at about £20 in Tescos, so hardly a big outlay. Maybe they feel you would continually ask for top up money??

Young people should be able to stay in contact with their parents at all times. Parents should be able to contact their kids at any time.
In an emergency it can be a life saver.
I'll pay the monthly charges from my job.
It will teach me responsibility...
