IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However...... the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct! " crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others

In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some
Christian, right wing, political slogan.. We adopted this motto because
Christian men and women.......on Christian principles.............
founded this nation..... and this is clearly documented. It is
certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools.
If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the
world as your new home.........because God is part of our culture.

If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam,
then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this
planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to
change, and we really don't care how you did things where you
came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle.
Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his
opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so! But
once you are done complaining....... whining...... and griping......
about our flag....... our pledge...... our national motto........or
our way of life....I highly encourage you to take advantage of
one other Great American Freedom.......
THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

It is Time for America to Speak up If you agree -- pass this
along; if you don't agree -- delete it - You are in the WRONG
Country!
AMEN
I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends (and enemies)
it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all
try, please!

LaCrosse, WI Paper Opinion Section had a similiar statement today
but was a quote from Theodore Roosevelt made more eloquently in 1907.
"In the first place, we should insisit that if the immigrant who comes
here in 'good faith' becomes an American and assimilates himself to us,
he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is
an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or
birthplace of origin. But this is predicated upon the person's
becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an
American......there can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who
says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at
all. We have room for but one flag -- the American Flag. We have room
for but one language here, and that is the English Language. And we
have room for but one sole loyalty, and that is a loyalty to the
American people."

Well, that looks like taking patriotism a bit too far. I'm all for people being very proud of who they are (and am very proud myself of my country and of being who I am) and freedom is a blessing.
I am not an American, I have never been to America, and I have been learning English almost since I was a baby. I learn about America and the English language willingly and with excitement, and also with the hope that I might come to visit America someday. I don't know everything that's going on in America, however, and therefore I am in no position to fully understand the point being made by whoever wrote that message.
However, one of the most important things I've learned in my life is this:
The more universal you are, the better you are.
The more you are willing to learn and evolve in your life, the better it can work out for you.
I seek to learn. I live to learn. I live to evolve and to change and to make myself better and better in all aspects of my existence.
That's what keeps me happy to learn more and more about the English language, as well as many others. That's what makes me more and more curious about America and anxious to become friends with them, as with many other people from all over the world. That's what makes me think that an important part of me is American, even though I have never been to America.
Shutting myself off from all other nations and forms of culture would never help towards that end, nor would Americans then be very willing to accept me in their land, I surmise.
And while I understand the obvious need for there to be mutual understanding between all people, and that therefore all immigrants to America should indeed try to learn English, or even Spanish, as a way of thanking America for the opportunity they have been given, I do not agree that other people do not have the right to bring their culture with them. And if this is not the point being made in that message, then excuse me -- that's what is sounds like.
I live in a country with a language that is quite more complex than English, and with which English speakers often experience serious difficulties, which result in discouragement and even shyness. How right would it be of me to make them feel even worse by not approving of their bad use of our language?
I guess I still have a lot of things to say about this, which could easily make for a book, but maybe the most important thing I'm trying to say is that America is a great country and should stay great. Towards that end, I think BOTH Americans and immigrants should adapt to one another, just as it should happen in every country in the world that receives immigrants -- America is probably not the only country where this happens.
I come from only one country which I am truly proud of.
But my life shows me not only one country, but the world, and I feel that to be a gift.
I welcome and embrace the world, giving equal chances to all things that are there for me to see and to get to know.
I am thankful for the chance to experience what the world has to show me and to teach me and to surprise me with.
I try not to fear new experiences.
By seeking to acquire knowledge and wisdom, I try to make myself ready to respond to challenges and problems, and to dangers and threats as well.
Living my life with an open mind and learning the world, I become increasingly better and proud of myself.
Being both who I am and who you are, I become more than what I would be if I assumed you to have no value.
I am no longer only what I was. I have now made myself more. And tomorrow I will be even more. And the day after, even more.
I like to think that this is where the Americans' pride also comes from.
And I don't see why their patriotism and pride should be offending others. I also do not see why they should be offended by foreign cultures and people, some of which actually love them very much.
Godspeed, Americans.
May God help you make the right decisions.

Well that's one of the silliest things I've read recently .. this is the reason our email program has a little command called "DELETE". There's lots of crap whizzing about the web .. and this is some of it. Don't let it get to you .. there will always be people with differing opinions ..
I do wonder though how the author of that long woffle came to the conclusion that the country was formed on Christian principles, its early history is so violent and bloody, with a lot of injustice against the original Americans (what they call "Native" Americans now) plowing through and taking what they wanted .. not considering tribes or slaves or even women as worthy of respect .. to me that is not Christian and to call it that is an insult to Jesus. I often wonder how those early citizens justified the line, "liberty and justice for all" when it was anything but.
Don't mean to knock the USA .. but I don't think looking at the past through rose coloured glasses helps much. And whoever wrote that mail is clearly not the most well-informed person. Or the most mature. Or the most Christian. And I'm pretty sure s/he doesn't necessarily speak for all Americans.
Next time you get something like that .. just delete it .. it's not worth the angst it causes.

I honestly donr care about immigrants or people who werte born in the USA think. I am me and I will do what suites me and what I feel as long as its within the law. For all I care all the so call raceist and people other wise can go jump into the deep end of the pool. I came to this place fair and square and I will talk any languge, listen to what I want and run my life anyway I want. if I am not breaking any laws of this land then I am within in my rights si all others can go to hell. If this country wants me to speak english, then pass a law that all have to do the same, If they want me to belive in christanity then agaon pass a law banning all ther religion except christinity etc etc etc etc etc . If not then get out of my way, leave he the fu*k alone and just dont bother me and I will in return do the same. If anyone comes trying to push their crap on me then I will resist and I will stand my ground. By the way I am a atheist and a tax paying citizen of this FREE nation and thats where I stand.................

-To the author of this message: Please don't use the word "we," because not all "true" Americans feel the same way you do. Stop lumping me in with your message, because frankly I think you are a heartless isolationist and a bigot. Thank you for making our country a hard place to live for people who have already had a hard life. Can you hear the sarcasm dripping?-
I can understand the idea that if someone from another country were to immigrate here that they be expected to meet certain standards or protocols to ensure their true intention to stay in this country and abide by our laws. That is perfectly fine. To ask someone to give up their culture and their language just to live in our "great" society, however, is ridiculous.

so whats your point? Immigration is going to happen weather you or anyone else likes or dislikes it. So by putting this out there you are the one complaining. adjust, adapt, do what you need to do but don't be a hypocrite.

i personally relatively agree with that email, were not invading other peoples countries and messing up what theyve worked so hard for for hundreds of years. i am happy to see immigrants coming over to america in an attempt to improve their lives and for their families, but i think the majority of them are extremely ignorant about our expectations of them. they are guests.
